Observatory Park -Denver
Observatory Park, located between Evans and Iliff Avenues and Milwaukee and Fillmore Streets, is a favorite gathering place for social outings and student events.
Astronomy buffs are particular fans of this park, since it is named for the 1890 Chamberlin Observatory, donated to the University of Denver by Humphrey Baker Chamberlin and designed by Denver architect Robert S. Roeschlaub.
The history of the University Park/Observatory Park neighborhood lies in one man-John Evans. Evans was named Colorado’s 2nd territorial governor by Abraham Lincoln in 1862. Active in railroads and real estate, he developed Northwestern University in the 1870’s, and wanted to create a comparable institution here in Denver.
The University of Denver (DU) and Iliff School of Theology were founded downtown in 1864 by John Evans who moved to Observatory Park in 1880. Humphrey Baker Chamberlain donated money for the telescope now housed in Romanesque Chamberlain Observatory. The telescope’s remarkable 20-inch refractor lens had been displayed at the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair.
Most of the residences that were built in the 1930s to 1950s are small. Streets bordering the park are graced by lovely Victorian-style homes. Observatory Park serves as a recreational focal point for the neighborhood with fields for ball games, volleyball and tennis courts.
Observatory Park offers the charm of a college town, the convenience of a central location, and the serenity of a traditional neighborhood where lovely historic homes and mature shade trees line picturesque streets and neighbors visit from front porches on summer evenings.
Observatory Park enjoys all the convenience of Denver University’s college campus. Mansions with attached carriage houses rest on wide streets and the mature tree-lined. Observatory Park is named for the Romanesque Chamberlin Observatory. Many homes were built to accommodate DU faculty along the perimeter of Observatory Park and the neighborhood continued to thrive along with DU. The city of Denver took over the park in 1952, adding tennis courts and a playground.
