Parks & Open Space
Denver has over 4,000 acres of traditional parks and parkways which include 2,500 urban natural acres, over 300 acres of parks designated Rivers & Trails and an additional 14,000 acres of spectacular mountain parks. You will find a variety of amenities, including picnic areas, jogging paths, recreation centers, hiking trails, or playground equipment.
Living in Downtown Denver and the center city neighborhoods puts you in the middle of the region’s premier parks and Open Spaces. All told, there are 80 acres of parks in the core of Downtown Denver.
The heart of Downtown features Skyline Park, a 3-acre urban open space on Arapahoe Street that reopened in July 2004 following an extensive renovation. The historic Civic Center Park is nearby spanning between the Denver City & County Building and the Colorado State Capitol.
The newest additions to the city’s parks systems are in the Central Platte Valley. The 30-acre Commons Park (opened in 2001) includes the nation’s largest public outdoor skate park; the oval-shaped City of Cuernavaca Park; Confluence Park at the junction of Cherry Creek and the South Platte River; and other smaller South Platte parks: Fishback, Centennial Flower Gardens and Gates-Crescent. Confluence Park also boasts a man-made rapids that is popular with kayakers, convienently located for after-work paddling. The center city neighborhoods are dotted with parks–Mestizo/Curtis Park (one of the oldest parks in Denver), Cheesman Park in Capitol Hill, Sunken Gardens Park in La Alma/Lincoln Park, to name a few.
Denver also has more than 650 miles of paved bike paths with great connections to Downtown. The two most prominent paths–Cherry Creek and South Platte–stretch southeast and southwest through the metro area, and converge at Confluence Park just minutes from the 16th Street Mall.
