Gov. Bill Ritter on Wednesday launched a statewide Solar Residential Program that will provide rebates to customers who install solar panels on rooftops or solar hot-water heaters in homes.
Rebates of up to $3,000 will be offered to roughly 75 customers who install solar hot-water heaters. The program also will offer rebates of up to $12,000 for solar panels to roughly 50 customers, excluding those who live in the service territories of Xcel Energy and Aquila.
In total, the program will have $1 million. Half the money will be put up by the state and the remaining funds matched by participating municipalities, utilities and nonprofit organizations.
“While publicly regulated utilities such as Xcel offer rebates for solar-electric systems, there are many other utilities in the state where incentives aren’t available,” said Tom Plant, director of the Governor’s Energy Office.
“We are initiating this program to open the opportunity to participate in the New Energy Economy to all Coloradans, regardless of where you live.”
Plant said 20 matching grants of up to $25,000 would be offered to participating municipalities or utilities – 10 for solar panels and 10 for solar hot-water heaters. Funding for this program was created through the Clean Energy Fund passed by lawmakers last year.
